The checkpoints I go through, in order
- Hardware plating. Look at the highest-wear points: strap rings, the zipper pull, base feet, and the closure. Pitting, cloudy patches, or a brassy tinge under the gold tone means thin plating. On a Medusa head or Virtus V bar, the relief should be crisp, with sharp edges where the raised face meets the background.
- Stitching. Even spacing, no skipped stitches, no puckering along the top edge. On the Greca pattern, the repeat should stay parallel to the bag's edge. If it drifts or the corners don't meet cleanly, that's a cutting error, not wear.
- Material and shape. Calfskin should spring back when you press it. Coated canvas should feel firm rather than tacky. A bag that slumps into a puddle when empty has lost its interlining, and that gets worse with use.
- Zippers and closures. Run every zipper the full length. Drag, catching, or a pull that wobbles on the slider are the most common failure points on any bag.
- Interior. Check the lining seams, the slip pocket stitching, and any ink or transfer stains. Smell matters too. A solvent or glue odor fades in a week or two in most cases. A musty smell means it was stored damp and won't go away.
- Edges and straps. Glazing should be smooth and continuous. Cracks in the edge paint show up fast on straps, and once they start, they spread.
Grades and what they actually tell you
Resale platforms use words like excellent, very good, good, fair, and those map to visible wear. Replica sellers use tier words instead: AAA, 1:1, mirror, super mirror. Treat the tiers as a rough price band and nothing more. Within any tier, a bag still gets graded on physical condition, and a "mirror" bag with a cracked strap is worth less than a plain 1:1 in clean shape.

Keeping one in good condition
Store the bag stuffed, inside the dust bag, out of direct sun. Sun fades coated canvas and dries leather. Wrap chains so they don't press into the leather. Wipe hardware with a dry soft cloth after handling, since skin oils dull plating fastest. Don't stack heavy bags on top of it. Rotate what you carry so one strap isn't taking stress every day.
One legal note
In the US, importing or selling counterfeit goods that carry a trademarked logo is illegal, and customs can seize shipments. That doesn't change how you grade a bag's condition, but it does affect where you can buy, return, and resell. Worth knowing before you spend.
