Short answer
Men's Hermes replicas copy a short list of models: the Haut a Courroies 40 and 50, the Birkin 40, the Sac a Depeches, the Kelly Depeches, the Steve messenger and the Herbag Zip 39. Listings run from about $200 to $800. The bags are counterfeit. They carry Hermes trademarks without authorization, and US law treats selling them as trademark infringement and, in cases, a federal crime. US Customs can seize shipments at the border.
The men's models that get copied
- Haut a Courroies (HAC) — the oldest of the group, created for carrying saddles and boots. Sold in 40 cm and 50 cm. The HAC 40 is the size most men carry.
- Birkin 40 — the Birkin launched in 1984. Sizes are 25, 30, 35 and 40 cm. The 40 cm is the largest and the one used as a men's travel bag.
- Sac a Depeches — a single-handle briefcase shape that dates to the early 20th century. Common sizes are 38 cm and 41 cm.
- Kelly Depeches — a document holder with a front flap and a Kelly turnlock. Listed at 38 cm.
- Steve — a men's messenger bag from the 2010s. It no longer appears in the current line, so it shows up mainly in resale and replica listings.
- Herbag Zip 39 — canvas body with leather trim. Unisex. The 39 cm is the large size.
Leathers and hardware
Men's sizes use the same leathers as the women's line: Togo, Clemence, Epsom, Fjord, Box calf, Vache Hunter and Barenia. Barenia shows up on the HAC and takes a patina with use. Hardware comes in palladium, gold tone and, on some models, brushed metal. Hermes uses saddle stitching, which is two needles and one thread, at about 8 to 9 stitches per inch.
What "1:1" means in listings
There is no accepted standard behind the terms 1:1, mirror or AAA. No trade body grades replica bags. The labels come from sellers, not from a certification system. Buyers who compare replicas to originals look at leather grain, hardware weight, the blind stamp, stitch density and edge paint. None of those checks confirms an item matches an original bag.
Price ranges
Authentic Birkin 40 and HAC 40 bags sell at retail in the five figures in USD. Hermes does not offer Birkin, Kelly or Haut a Courroies bags for purchase on its website. Replica listings sit between about $200 and $800, with some sellers asking more for the HAC 40 and Birkin 40.
Legal status in the US
A counterfeit is a product with a mark identical to, or indistinguishable from, a registered trademark used without permission. Civil claims fall under 15 U.S.C. Section 1114, the Lanham Act. Criminal trafficking falls under 18 U.S.C. Section 2320. US Customs and Border Protection can detain and seize counterfeit goods at the border. There is no personal-use exemption for trademark-counterfeit items. Buying carries lower legal exposure than selling or importing for resale, but the bag remains counterfeit and cannot be resold legally as genuine.
Checks buyers run before paying
- Blind stamp and date code placement inside the bag.
- Engraving on the turnlock and the feet.
- Stitch angle and count per inch.
- Weight of the hardware.
- Seller history and photo consistency across listings.
For an authentic bag, only Hermes or a resale authentication service can confirm the item. For a replica, no third party verifies the claim.
