Quick answer
A Louis Vuitton clutch that is not authentic fails one or more of four checks: the date code or RFID chip, the heat stamp, the hardware engraving, and the stitch count. The Monogram canvas is coated cotton canvas, not leather. A clutch priced near $80 with a Monogram print is a counterfeit. Authentic LV clutches sell at retail for several hundred dollars and up, by model.
Check 1: Date code or RFID chip
Louis Vuitton stamped date codes from 1982 to 2021. The code sits inside an interior seam pocket, on a leather tab or on the lining. Two letters mark the factory. Four digits mark the production month and year.
Since March 2021, LV put RFID chips in most bags and phased out date codes. A clutch made after 2021 with a visible date code needs a second look. A clutch made before 1982 with a date code is not authentic.

Check 2: Heat stamp
The heat stamp reads "LOUIS VUITTON" with "made in France," "made in Spain," "made in Italy," or "made in USA." The letters sit on one line, in one font, at one height, with even spacing. Common failures on fakes: mixed fonts, letters that drift upward, a stamp on the outside of the bag, or a missing country line.
Check 3: Hardware and zipper
Zipper pulls on many authentic pieces come from Lampo, Riri, Talon, or YKK. Brass hardware carries a crisp engraving with clean edges. Fake hardware feels light in the hand. Look for tool marks, a blurred logo, or a gold tone that flakes at the corners.
Check 4: Canvas, stitching, alignment
Monogram canvas is cotton canvas with a PVC coating. It does not soak up water the way leather does, and it does not stretch at the seams. Authentic stitching runs about 8 to 10 stitches per inch, even on the front and the back. Fake stitching drops to 5 or 6 stitches per inch, or it wanders off the seam line. On the Monogram pattern, the LVs and flowers line up across the flap, the body, and the pocket.
Price signals
Clutch style models include the Pochette Accessoires, the Pochette Metis, and the Toiletry Pouch 26. Retail and resale prices change with model, size, and condition. A listing far below the current resale range points to a replica. So does a seller who cannot name the model or the year.
Legal status in the US
Trafficking in counterfeit goods is a federal crime under 18 U.S.C. 2320. A first offense carries up to 10 years in prison. Civil claims fall under the Lanham Act, 15 U.S.C. 1114. US Customs and Border Protection seizes counterfeit shipments. The personal use exemption does not cover counterfeit goods. A buyer who imports a fake clutch can lose the item and face a penalty.
Limits of a photo check
Photos hide stitch count, canvas weight, and hardware feel. Louis Vuitton does not authenticate items bought from resellers, and store staff may decline the request. For a high value piece, a paid third party authenticator is the usual route.
