The chain is one of the fastest ways to check a Louis Vuitton bag. Chains on the Alma BB, the Multi Pochette Accessoires, the Coussin, and the strap of the Pochette Metis are solid brass with a gold-tone finish. Each link is closed with a solder joint. A real chain feels heavy for its size. Most replica chains are hollow, use plated steel or zinc alloy, and weigh less than the real part.

Why the chain is a weak point on replicas

Metal costs money. A maker who copies a canvas print can save on hardware without changing the look in a product photo. Hollow links, thin plating, and a light spring in the clasp are common on fake bags. The chain also takes load, so cheap metal bends, and plating wears through where links rub.

Weight and metal

  • Solid brass chain: heavy, cool to the touch, no rattle when you shake it near your ear.
  • Hollow or die-cast chain: light, warm, and it rings.
  • Magnet test: brass is not magnetic. A magnet that sticks to a link points to plated steel.

The magnet test is a screen, not a proof. Some brass alloys contain enough iron to react. Use it with the other checks.

Solder joints and link shape

Look at the seam on each link. On an authentic chain the seam is filled with solder and sanded. You feel a smooth surface. On a replica the seam is a visible gap or a raised bump. Links on fakes also vary in thickness from one to the next.

Check the link shape. Links should be even, with the same bend radius. Pull the chain. A soldered chain holds its shape. A bent-shut chain opens under load.

Color and plating

Louis Vuitton gold-tone hardware reads as a muted yellow, not orange and not bright yellow. Plating on fakes is often too yellow, too shiny, or too pale. Look at the inside of a link where it rubs. Worn plating shows a grey or copper base metal. Real brass keeps its color when the thin gold layer wears.

Clasp, spring, and swivel

The clasp should open with firm spring tension and close with a clear click. A soft or gritty spring points to a cheap part. Check the swivel. It should turn with light drag, not spin free and not seize. Fakes often use a stamped sheet metal clasp instead of a cast part.

Stamps and engraving

Some Louis Vuitton clasps and rivets carry an engraved logo. The letters are crisp, with even depth. On fakes the stamp is shallow, blurry, or too deep at the edges. Louis Vuitton does not engrave every chain link, so a blank link is not proof of a fake. A wrong logo, a wrong font, or a laser mark on a part that should be stamped is a problem.

Model notes

Link size and chain length change by model. The Coussin chain is thick and short. The Multi Pochette chain is thin. Compare a bag to the same model, not to a different bag. Louis Vuitton does not publish link counts, so claims about an exact number are not verifiable.

What photos cannot show

Weight, spring tension, and the feel of a solder joint do not come through in a photo. Sellers show the best angle. Ask for a close-up of a single link and a weight in grams. A seller who cannot send one is a risk.

Legal note

Counterfeit bags are illegal to import and sell in the US. CBP seizes counterfeit goods at the border. The FTC treats the sale of counterfeit goods as a violation that can bring civil penalties. Buyers have no warranty or repair path on a fake chain.
