Short answer

Most fake Loewe bags use coated split leather, polyurethane (PU) on a fabric backing, microfiber, or PVC. A small number use full-grain cowhide. Claims of "calfskin" or "nappa" on a replica need proof at the cut edge and the grain. Loewe's own bags use calfskin, nappa, lambskin, canvas and raffia, and those skins carry a specific hand and smell.

Materials found in replicas

  • PU on woven backing: plastic top layer, fabric core. Common on Puzzle and Hammock copies.
  • Coated split leather: cowhide split with a PU film. The cut edge shows a fiber core and a thin plastic coat.
  • Microfiber: polyester or nylon microfiber with a PU top. Soft, uniform, no pore pattern.
  • PVC: solid plastic sheet. Stiff in cold, glossy at folds.
  • Bonded leather: leather scraps glued to a backing. Frays at the edge.

Check the material in four steps

  1. Cut edge: look at a strap end or seam. Full grain shows dense fiber. Coated split shows a fabric core and a plastic line.
  2. Grain: real calfskin has pore variation and a grain that changes across the panel. Stamped PU repeats the same pattern at a fixed interval.
  3. Smell: leather smells of tannery. PU smells of plastic or glue. A strong perfume smell masks PU.
  4. Heat: a lighter held 20 mm from a hidden area for two seconds. Leather curls and smells of char. PU melts and shrinks. This test damages the bag.

Label claims

US rules treat "genuine leather" as a term with no grade meaning. The FTC requires accurate origin and material claims for leather and imitations. A seller who writes "calfskin" on a PU bag makes a false claim. Ask for the fiber content in writing.

Price and material

Full-grain cowhide costs more than PU. A wholesale replica at low unit price carries PU or coated split. A replica at high unit price may carry cowhide, not Loewe's calfskin. The material source is unknown unless the seller names a tannery.

What remains unknown

Batch materials change. A sample from one batch does not describe the next. No public test data covers replica Loewe bags. Judge the piece, not the listing.
