Checks on a used bag

  1. Blind stamp. A craftsman code sits inside the bag, applied with a metal die. Letters and numbers show depth and a light halo.
  2. Date stamp. Hermès marks the year with a letter inside a shape. The code maps to a production year.
  3. Stitching. Saddle stitch uses two needles and one thread. Stitches slant, and the count stays even around curves.
  4. Hardware. Palladium and gold plated parts carry weight. Engraving is cut into the metal, not printed on the surface.
  5. Leather grain. Togo, Epsom, and Clemence each show a different grain. Fake leather repeats one pattern across the panel.
  6. Receipts and dust bags. Paperwork is easy to forge. Treat it as weak evidence.

Price signals

A Birkin 25 in good condition sells for more than the boutique price on the secondary market. A listing at 30 to 50 percent below market for a used bag is a warning sign. Sellers who ask for bank transfer, crypto, or payment off the platform remove buyer protection.

Verification

Third party authenticators use microscopy on stitching, leather pores, and hardware plating. Some issue a certificate with a photo record. Authentication after purchase has limits: a certificate does not create a refund right. Confirm the return policy in writing before payment.
