What gives a fake Hermès Kelly crocodile away?
The paperwork and the skin. A fake Hermes Kelly crocodile can look sharp in photos, but CITES documents, scale pattern, and species marks are harder to copy well. I start there, not with the logo.
Start with the CITES paperwork
Real Hermès exotic bags ship with CITES documentation. The certificate should name the species, permit number, and date. The details should match the bag and the seller's story. A generic card with no permit number proves nothing. Counterfeiters copy cards, so I compare the species on the paper to the species mark on the bag. If the seller dodges questions about the certificate, I walk.
Read the crocodile scales
Crocodile skin has pores in the scales. Alligator skin does not. Hermès uses both, so a seller who calls every shiny exotic crocodile is already sloppy. On a Niloticus or Porosus bag, the scale size and pore pattern should look natural, not stamped. Big square scales on the center panel are normal. Perfect repetition is not. Fake crocodile often looks embossed: flat, even, and too clean.
Check the species stamp and hardware
Hermès marks exotic bags with a species symbol. The mark should be crisp and consistent with the CITES paper. Hardware should feel solid. Stitching should be saddle stitch, angled and tight. A high-end fake can pass all three in a photo. In hand, the skin and paper are the harder test.
Know the legal risk
In the U.S., trafficking counterfeit goods is illegal. CBP can seize fake bags. Crocodile leather also falls under CITES, so cross-border sales need permits. A fake Hermes Kelly crocodile with no valid CITES paper is a customs problem, not just a quality problem. If you sell, that risk lands on you. If you buy, you may lose the bag and the money.
What I ask a supplier
- Which species is the skin, and where is the species mark?
- Does the CITES certificate match the bag, not just the listing?
- Can you show the scale pores in natural light?
- What is the return policy if the paperwork fails?
A fake Hermes Kelly crocodile is not a bargain if the paperwork is blank. Judge the skin, the paper, and the seller's answers. The logo is the last thing I check.
