Short answer
The Hermès Caban is an older shoulder bag with a flat front flap and one strap. Replicas of it exist, but few factories cut the pattern. Most 1:1 replica output goes to the Birkin and the Kelly. Expect $200 to $600 for a Caban copy. Authentic vintage examples trade for much more. Public records on this model are thin, so measure and photograph any bag before you pay.
What the Caban is
Hermès made many shoulder models across the 1960s and 1970s. The Caban sits among the flap bags, close in shape to the Constance but without the H clasp. Resale listings for it are less common than for the Kelly. Auction catalogs are the best public source for construction detail on older Hermès stock, because each lot ships with a condition report.
Leather and construction
Older Hermès flap bags come in box calf, a smooth leather with a tight grain. Box calf scratches and takes a polish. Replica makers often swap in embossed calf or coated split leather. Ask for the leather name in writing. Ask for a close photo of the flap edge. Saddle stitching on an authentic bag sits at an angle on both faces of the leather. Machine stitching runs straight on one face and loops on the other.
Hardware and stamps
- Blind stamp: craftsperson code plus a year letter, pressed without ink.
- Logo stamp: shallow and even, not cut deep into the leather.
- Plating: gold hardware on older bags wears at the corners and does not flake.
- Zipper: metal slider with a maker mark.
Hermès changed its year letter system across decades. Match the letter to the era the seller claims. A 1970s bag does not carry a 2000s code.
Measurements to confirm before payment
Width, height, depth and strap drop, in centimeters. Ask the supplier to put a ruler in the photo. A copy that is 2 cm off changes the flap proportion and the strap angle.
Questions for a wholesale supplier
- Which leather, and is it full grain?
- Is the hardware solid brass with plating, or zinc alloy?
- Can you send pre-shipment photos of the actual unit?
- What is the return window?
- Do you hold the Caban in stock, or cut it to order?
A supplier who cannot answer 1 through 3 is a reseller, not a factory. Lead times above 20 days point to made-to-order production.
