The short answer: a real Birkin Retourne is assembled with the seams turned to the inside, so the top edge is soft and rounded. Most fakes copy a Sellier shape, or copy a Retourne and then fail on stitch angle, hardware weight, and the blind stamp. A counterfeit is not a cheaper version of the bag. It is a different object, and selling one is a federal crime in the United States.
What Retourne means
Retourne is French for turned. Hermès builds the bag inside out and then turns it. The stitch line sits inside the seam, and the top edge slouches. Sellier is the other method: stitching runs on the outside of the edge and the corners are sharp and rigid. The Birkin entered the line in 1984 and takes its name from Jane Birkin. Retourne is the standard build in Togo and Clemence leather. Sellier Birkins use stiffer leathers and hold a higher resale value.
Price context
Hermès does not publish Birkin prices. Reported boutique prices for a Birkin 25 or Birkin 30 sit between about $10,000 and $13,000. Auction results run higher, and Sotheby's and Christie's have sold exotic leather Birkins in six figures. A listing far under that band is not a discount.
Where fakes fail
- Stitch angle. A saddle stitch set by hand produces a slanted V on both faces of the seam. Machine stitching sits flat and straight on one side.
- Thread. Waxed linen, with visible hand tension. Polyester thread reads too even.
- Hardware. Turnlock, plates, and feet are solid brass with gold or palladium plating. Copies use plated zinc alloy and weigh less.
- Blind stamp. Inside the back panel behind the flap there is one letter for the year, a craftsperson code, and the HERMÈS PARIS mark. Year letters change, so check a current chart, not a forum post from 2018.
- Grain. Togo has a fine, irregular pebble. Clemence is bigger and softer. Epsom is embossed and pressed. Fake Togo shows a repeating stamped pattern.
- Interior. Chevre lining, one flat pocket, one slip pocket, clean seams. Copies leave glue at the seam edges.
- Smell. Vegetable-tanned leather smells of leather. Copies smell of solvent.
- Accessories. Clochette, lock, keys, rain coat, dust bag, box. On a real set the lock number matches the clochette.
Why 1:1 replica claims do not hold
A replica claim rests on appearance. Authentication rests on construction, tannage, hardware alloy, and Hermès records. A bag can photograph well and still fail on the blind stamp or the leather grain. Hermès has never licensed a third party to produce Birkins, and the company does not sell the model through its website. No factory outside France holds a Birkin production contract.
The legal position
Under 18 U.S.C. § 2320, trafficking in counterfeit goods carries up to 10 years for a first offense and up to 20 years for a repeat offense. U.S. Customs and Border Protection seizes counterfeit handbags at ports of entry and at international mail facilities. A buyer can lose the item with no refund, and a reseller faces criminal charges plus civil damages from the trademark owner.
If you inspect a bag
Use a 10x loupe, a small scale, and a UV light. Open the flap and check stitching from the inside, not from the closed bag. Compare the stamp letter against a current year chart. Weigh the hardware. Ask for the original boutique receipt and the dust bag with matching markings. If a seller will not show the blind stamp, stop there. That one photo settles most cases in under a minute.
