Most counterfeit Hermès bags reach US buyers through marketplaces, social media accounts, and wholesale sites overseas. Hermès sells Birkin and Kelly bags through its own boutiques. The company does not wholesale, does not franchise, does not discount, and does not run outlets. A new Birkin 25 starts above $10,000 at US boutique retail. A bag sold for $1,200 is not a Birkin.
Blind stamp and date code
Each Hermès bag carries a blind stamp, a heat-pressed mark with no ink, set inside the back wall or under a strap. The stamp holds two parts: a shape and letter for the production year, plus a second letter or letter pair for the artisan. One craftsperson makes each bag from cut to finish, so a bag shows one artisan stamp, not several. Counterfeit shops press dates that do not match the model year, use ink instead of heat, or add the mark on a patch of leather stitched in later.
Saddle stitching
Hermès sews bags with saddle stitching. Two needles pass through every hole from opposite sides, so thread crosses on both faces of the leather. Machines produce a lock stitch, which looks like a straight line on the reverse. Turn a bag inside out or open a flap and look at the back of the seam. Two rows of stitches should appear. Hermès uses linen thread coated in beeswax, not nylon. Seam density on a Birkin or Kelly runs about 8 to 10 stitches per inch, set at a 45 degree angle.
Hardware
Hermès hardware is brass with gold or palladium plating. It has weight. The turnlock closes with one firm click and no rattle. Bottom feet attach with screws, not glue. Engravings sit shallow and sharp. On counterfeit bags, plating flakes at the corners within months, screws strip, and internal rivets at the handle bases sit crooked.
Leather
Togo, Epsom, Barenia, Swift, and Clemence each have a distinct grain and drape. Togo has a pebbled grain that rolls when pressed with a thumb. Epsom is heat-pressed and holds its shape. Counterfeit factories use chrome-tanned hide or polyurethane-coated split leather. It smells like glue or plastic. Grain repeats in a machine pattern across the panel.
Seller and paperwork
Hermès does not issue certificates of authenticity. No card, hologram, or serial number database exists. A seller who offers a certificate creates a flag. Rain covers, boxes, dust bags, and clochette keys are easy to copy, so packaging proves little. Resale platforms that photograph the blind stamp, measure the bag, and list the artisan code give a buyer more to check than a listing with three photos.
Legal risk
US Customs and Border Protection reported 22,660 intellectual property seizure cases in fiscal year 2023, with an estimated retail value of $2.7 billion. Counterfeit goods move through small parcel mail, which makes seizure at the border likely for a single bag. Buyers can lose the item and the payment.
Checks before payment
- Ask for a photo of the blind stamp under daylight, without flash.
- Ask for a photo of the reverse side of a seam.
- Weigh the bag. A Birkin 25 in Togo runs near 0.7 kg empty.
- Compare the price against current boutique retail. Anything under half is a warning.
- Check the seller's history for the bag on a paid authentication service first.
