A fake Chloé knockoff is a bag that copies a Chloé design and logo without a license. Chloé grants no such license. In the United States the bag is a counterfeit good, and selling it is a federal crime.
Three words, three meanings
Knockoff: a bag that copies the shape of a Chloé style but carries no Chloé name or logo. This sits in a gray zone, design patents aside.
Fake Chloe Replica: How to Spot the Real from the Fake
Replica: trade wording for a bag that copies both the shape and the logo. This is the counterfeit category.
Fake Chloé Accessories: How to Identify Counterfeit Items
Counterfeit: the legal term. It covers any good that carries a mark the same as, or close to, a registered mark (15 U.S.C. § 1127).
Checkpoints on a Chloé bag
- Hardware: the engraving reads Chloé with the accent over the e. Copies drop the accent or use a wider font.
- Date code: a leather tag with a two-part number sits inside the seam. On models made after 2000 the number repeats on a card.
- Hologram: some models carry a sticker with a serial number that matches the date code card.
- Zippers: Chloé uses Lampo and Riri pulls. A blank pull, or a YKK pull on a Marcie, is a mismatch.
- Leather: calfskin on the Marcie and Paddington has a matte grain and a tannery smell, not a plastic smell.
- Dust bag: beige cotton with a printed logo. Copies ship with satin or a stitched label.
- Price: Chloé leather bags retail near $1,000 to $3,000. A $180 "new" Marcie is not surplus stock.
What US law does
18 U.S.C. § 2320 covers trafficking in counterfeit goods. A first conviction carries up to 10 years in prison and a fine. The Lanham Act allows statutory damages up to $2,000,000 per counterfeit mark per type of goods when the use is willful (15 U.S.C. § 1117(c)).
Customs and Border Protection can seize a shipment at the border. A narrow rule at 19 CFR 148.55 covers one counterfeit article of each type in accompanied baggage for personal use, not for resale. That rule does not cover mail or cargo.
Marketplaces, web hosts and payment processors act on takedown notices. Sellers who draw repeat notices lose accounts and funds.
If you already own one
Check the interior date code tag, the hardware font and the zipper maker. A bag with no interior tag and a blank zipper pull is a copy. Chloé does not run a public authentication desk. Third-party authenticators charge a fee and issue a written opinion, and that opinion is not a legal ruling.
What is not known
Chloé does not publish production counts, so nobody can date a bag from volume alone. Claims about "factory surplus" or "same production line" have no public evidence behind them.
