Short answer
The chain is the weakest single test. Genuine Chloé chain straps use solid brass links with gold-tone or palladium plating. Copies use die-cast zinc alloy or steel. Weight, weld quality, plating tone, and the stamped logo on the clasp matter more than the chain itself. Chloé publishes no public serial database, so a check means comparing construction details, not running a code.
What to check on the chain
- Weight. Brass has a density near 8.4 g/cm³. Zinc alloy sits near 7.1 g/cm³. A chain strap with no heft points to a cast copy.
- Link seams. Genuine links are welded and closed. Some copies show an open gap or a rough patch where the weld was ground down.
- Plating tone. Gold-tone hardware on Chloé bags from the 2010s is a pale yellow. A deep orange or green tint points to imitation plating. Tone shifts by model year, so treat it as one signal, not proof.
- Spring gate. The gate should open under smooth tension and sit flush when closed. Loose play and a weak spring are common on copies.
Logo stamping
The house name is Chloé, with an acute accent on the final e. Stamping appears on hardware where a model calls for it and on the interior leather tab. Letters are even in height and depth. Copies show uneven spacing, a missing accent, or a shallow stamp that fades at the edges. Some Chloé chain links carry no engraving at all. A blank link proves nothing.

Interior label and date code
Most Chloé bags carry a leather tab with the house name and a country of origin, often Italy. Many models add a second tab with an alphanumeric date code. The format changed over the years and differs by model, so an unfamiliar code is not proof of a fake. Chloé does not publish a code lookup.
What the chain cannot tell you
A correct chain does not confirm a bag. Copies pair passable hardware with wrong stitching, wrong leather grain, and wrong interior labels. Check stitch count per inch, edge paint, and lining material as well. If you cannot inspect the bag in person, ask the seller for photos of the interior tab, the hardware stamp, and the date code under daylight.
Where to verify
Paid authentication services compare construction details against reference bags. Resale platforms run their own checks before listing. Neither issues a certificate that covers every model year. For a bag bought at retail, the brand repair service can confirm a build. Chloé does not authenticate secondhand items for buyers.
