Short answer
A Chanel mini flap is fake when one or more of these fail: the serial number, the metal chip, the screws on the CC turnlock, the stitch count on the quilting, the interior stamp, the lining, and the price. A real mini rectangle measures about 20 x 12 x 6 cm, has a strap drop near 55 cm, and retails in the US above $4,000. A listing that calls a mini flap "1:1" and prices it at $150 to $600 is a replica. Chanel does not sell wholesale, so no supplier has new mini flaps at a discount.
Serial number and chip
Chanel used an 8-digit serial number on a hologram sticker, plus a matching authenticity card, through 2020. In 2021 Chanel dropped the sticker and card and placed a metal chip inside the bag. On a classic flap the chip sits in the lining on the left wall near the base. A bag from 2022 or later with a sticker is counterfeit. A bag from 2015 with a chip is counterfeit. Serial numbers and cards can be copied from photos online, so a correct number proves little on its own.

- Screws on the backplate of the CC turnlock: Chanel uses flathead screws. Phillips screws on that plate point to a fake.
- Plating: 24K gold plating ended around 2008. A 2020 mini flap listed with "24K gold hardware" is mislabeled at best.
- Chain: links are uniform in size, and the leather strip runs through each link with no skipped sections.
- Turnlock action: the CC lock turns with firm resistance and snaps into two positions.
Stitching and quilting
Count the stitches along one inch of the diamond quilting. Chanel flap quilting runs about 10 to 11 stitches per inch. Fakes often land at 6 to 8 stitches per inch, with wider gaps at the panel corners. The diamond points meet the flap edge and the side seams in line. The strap uses a saddle stitch with even tension and no loose thread ends.
Stamp and lining
The interior stamp reads CHANEL in gold foil, in caps, with MADE IN FRANCE or MADE IN ITALY under it. Letters are even in height and spacing, and the foil does not bleed into the leather grain. Classic flaps line in leather with a dark red tone. Some seasonal mini runs use textile. A bag that slumps at the base and folds flat under its own weight is worth a second look.
Price and paperwork
Chanel sets retail price and does not discount. No authorized dealer sells a new mini flap below the current Chanel price. Receipts, dust bags, boxes, and ribbons are easy to copy, and a seller who leads with paperwork and hides the bag details is a risk.
Why high-tier fakes pass these checks
Top replicas copy stitch counts, screw types, foil stamps, and chip placement. Photos cannot confirm a bag. A phone camera and a checklist have limits.
