Pick: 1:1 grade with a leather interwoven chain
A 1:1 grade Classic Flap uses a brass chain with a gold tone plate and a leather strip cut from the same hide as the body. The strip folds over the links and is stitched at both ends. Check three points before you buy: the strip color matches the bag, the stitching sits flush with the fold, and the end caps close with no gap. Ask the supplier for one close photo of each end cap. That photo settles most grading questions.

Where real and fake straps differ
- Metal base. Real hardware starts as brass and takes a gold plate. Cheap copies use zinc alloy. Zinc reads gray in daylight and shows pits at the edges.
- Leather strip. Real straps use lambskin or caviar from the same run as the bag. Copies use split leather with a printed grain. The strip is thinner and curls at the fold.
- Link shape. Real links are flat on the outer face and rounded inside. Copies often use a round link with a visible seam.
- End caps. Real caps are stamped and sit flush on the leather. Copies show glue and a rough seam.
- Color under light. Real plating keeps a warm tone. Copies turn copper at wear points after a few weeks.
- Weight. A real strap pulls the bag down when you lift the flap. A copy feels light in the same test.

- Mirror grade. Same chain hardware as 1:1, lower grade leather on the strip. Cost drops.
- Mid grade. Zinc chain, stitched vinyl strip. Passes a phone photo test, fails a hand test.
Check a strap in five minutes
- Hold the bag by the strap and lift it. The weight sits in the chain.
- Turn the chain to daylight. Look for pits or a copper tone.
- Find the two end caps. Look for glue lines.
- Rub the leather strip with a thumb. Lambskin warms and holds a mark for a second. Split leather does not.
- Measure the strap drop. Chanel lists a drop figure for each size on its product pages. Compare yours to that figure.
